Just like the river does not separate itself when it washes into the sea, I don’t know where I end and the rest of the world begins.
Everything feels close. Closer. Inside.
Pope Leo XIV recently said: “There are no ‘distant conflicts’ when human dignity is at stake.”
Same, Pope Leo, same.
Alaska got hot and I’m freaking out. (Maybe I'm a deep-sea creature.) Hell is freezing over with ICE and military in L.A. streets, and we’re dropping bombs on Iran. (Anyone else have South Park’s “Team America World Police” song looping through their head?)
I just can’t compartmentalize and divide things into little squares in boxes, like:
Them/me
Today/past/future
Joy/the suffering of others.
There is no separation between the river and the sea. All streams wash into the same body of water. No us v. them. No “other people’s children.”
Maybe it's because we live in quantum entanglement – the phenomenon where particles affect each other regardless of distance. Time and space integrate.
They say we need to put on our own oxygen masks first, but when those oxygen masks become laughing gas masks to us desensitize us from reality and absolve us of obligations to each other — when we start compartmentalizing so well that pretty soon the rest of the world just seems so blissfully far away — that’s disconnect from truth.
I had my biggest truth epiphany the way everyone should: by tripping on magic mushrooms in the middle of the Ho forest.
The human brain can invent stories, but nature is truth. She has figured out how to exist, evolve, and persist. Not saying she’s perfect, but self-sustaining, which is why humans developed the science of biomimicry, taking inspiration from nature.
The forest knows that strength comes from connection, not isolation. Trees shoot out nutrients to save other trees in the forest because when the forest thrives, individual organisms fare better. Under the mushrooms, vast mycelium networks connect all living things, exchanging nutrients, water, and even messages.
Meanwhile, our current president is paving over the grass in Jackie O.’s Rose Garden.
He says it’s because women in heels fall. Rather than blame patriarchy, he blames grass.
The snark in me says it’s because nature is truth, and truth is his kryptonite.

When we connect to nature, we connect to truth, to ourselves, and to each other. When we disconnect from it, we disconnect from self.
Anglo American culture silos everything from education to healthcare, but nature shows that true separation is impossible. For example, when creeks wash into the ocean, the water divides initially. But eventually, the waters integrate.
The mixing of waters nurtures life. Eagles come to the river’s mouth. Seals fish for salmon. Diversity creates resilience and encourages life.
My yearly birthday tradition is to go on a hike alone in the wilderness and just listen. I wish I could get our leaders off their missile porn and give them a forest bath, too.
The U.S. is spending $134 million to put the military in the streets of L.A. We dropped 14 multi-million-dollar “bunker buster” bombs on Iran.
Meanwhile, we don’t have enough money to educate, house, or feed all children in this country. I’m homeschooling my daughter because education in Alaska is broke.
Yesterday, I asked the divine Tarot if we’re entering into World War III, and it gave me this:
The Nine of Wands represents “weathering the battle.” Fatigue, persistence, gathering strength, wounds, and resilience.
If this administration could go touch grass and hear what the earth has been teaching Indigenous cultures for millennia, we might remember that there is no “us and them.” Only water finding its way to the wellspring.

Such a beautiful weaving of words with Nature, Summer. Thanks for reminding us that Nature has her own ways--and will have her way in the end.
Humans are but a blip on the cosmic map of creation. We may sow the seeds of our own destruction--so much for the *sapiens* in homo sapiens!
We may hurt terra firma with our heedless ways, but she will revitalize and send out new seeds and sprouts. And perhaps whatever new conscious life forms sprout from her roots will be wiser than we!
P.S. Forest bathing is the best Rx: heart-and-soul healing.
You cannot expect people who have disconnected from their hearts to forest-bathe, Summer. Only when the emotional and spiritual emptiness of their lives bites them on the butt will they even begin to wake up and start asking questions. I am grateful it is my job only to set boundaries on what I will and will not tolerate from them.
