Hello Loves,
They say we can’t just protest what we don’t want. We have to show them what we want, too.
So last evening of the full moon, shackled with insomnia, I imagined utopia.
::: How to Fix Gravity :::
We can become *starlight* again, when…..
politics becomes boring, and news is carried on the wind
every child gets a village of aunties and uncles, even neurodivergent ones
schools are not modeled after factories, but constructivist, community-based, and beautiful (think Montessori)
arts and play are integrated into every subject -- because “create” is top-tier in Bloom’s Taxonomy of critical thinking skills
parents give up their time to volunteer in the classroom, because society is not structured around profit, but community
every town has a free music festival -- because Folk Fest, Juneau, Alaska
children aren’t encouraged to leave home when they turn 18 so they can go produce, but families become larger and multigenerational, moving into larger compounds as people take lovers, some bear children, and no child “belongs” to anyone else
family is matriarchal and matrilineal -- because duh
government is run by women + the work week is four days long -- because Finland
public transportation: trains, buses, bicycles, scooters; everyone walks everywhere and is never in a hurry
time is flexible, fluid, and abundant
food is nourishing and delicious, and not just produced to be profitable
people who earn income past a certain threshold are taxed marginal tax at 80 to 90% -- because “build back America” post-depression
everyone contributes income to shared community services
people rely on one another, and social emotional skills are taught before reading, writing and ‘rithmetic
joy, leisure, music, laughter, beauty are prioritized
people are in touch with nature, living off the land as much as possible, listening to the cycle of nature
women decide their daily tasks depending on where they are in their menstrual cycle
BRING BACK THE MOTHERLOVING RED TENT
people live in ways that protect the future and honor the past and only use what they need and replenish and reseed what they take -- because time is viewed as eternal and everything is connected
always giving thanks, always giving back, “if you don’t have, I don’t have”
the energy you give out is what you get back
Decolonize. Wildernize. Indigenize.
I learned in college psychology class that to have change you need two things:
—to DESIRE to change
—to see the place you desire to change to
The conditions are in place. We ALL desire change soo badly. Thank you, Summer, for showing the place and shape we all desire to change to. You have laid out my own personal vision; may we reach that place together! (See Gary Snyder’s classic poem For The Children).
I’m reading Joan Halifax’s excellent old The Fruitful Darkness again right now. We may have to traverse the valley of darkness to get to that place, but get there WE WILL. And we will be stronger for it, united together, and will build what you have laid out. Thanks so much! 🙏🏼
I can't help but take note that your notions could all be implemented in the United States if a slightly improved version of the Equal Rights Amendment was ratified ... something like "Congress shall make no law concerning gender." It also sounds like Jefferson's notion of freedom in full bloom - life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
