Yes, I also always cry when I ingest performance art that viscerally ignites beauty. I usually cry as an audience member, when I watch a play or Broadway show. It’s overwhelming to witness humans creating such magical moments. I loved this performance along with Lady Gaga and Celine. Thank you for sharing it here to discuss!
You’re like the third person that has mentioned that performance so now I definitely have to watch! Glad I’m not the only one that cries at good art! 😂
My fave part of the opening ceremony was actually the mechanical horse with Joan of Arc astride it, ‘riding’ down the Seine - the shimmering silver lighting - and the a real horse, a silvery roan, again with Joan (!) in a simmering silvery costume w/black mask delivering the Olympic flag … stunning
Oh, thanks for the clip! I don’t have much access to the teli and Olympics and generally am not into the whole ethics of sports competition as a national narrative. BUT seeing a person do their best AND feel positive about it does bring on the tears.
this clip though, definitely an argument in favor of book banning 😂😂😂. Look what it might inspire! And the arts in general. Oh, I’m clutching my pearls. 🤣 loved it for all the creativity and reminders that these are difficult times. the arts are how we navigate these waters.
On another note, I read about the vitriol thrown at Simone when she dropped out of the 2021(2020) Olympics by the Right Rage Machine. Oof, even before Tokyo she had done so much for the sport and these whiny men who likely couldn’t do a back somersault without straining something (ego?) said she had let the country down and worse, blah blah blah. No matter how she rocks these games, she is GOAT!
Simone is definitely the goat not me lol but thank you and I love you for saying that! I love how she really brought mental health into the narrative and of course she got pushed back from those whiny boys and maybe some girls. Agree with what you say about the whole competition thing. Watching Olympic sports always stresses me out, but I love watching the highlights, especially Simone Biles! Oh my gosh jerks the tears out every single time!
What struck me about the clip I shared was how sometimes we do need to fight back, & it made me wonder if Sometimes peace is not always the answer… Been a lot of discussion on both sides lately regarding the Israeli occupation, etc., when and if violence is justified… But I’m tired so I probably shouldn’t break my brain too much thinking about that tonight ha.
I put it on in real time expecting meh background TV. Instead I was blown away like never in my six decades plus. A faceless fencer leaping across the rooftops of Paris? Multiple Marie Antoinettes holding their heads on hips? Ripping metal guitar on the window sills of the French parliament? Celine Dion covering Edith Piaf with the performance of a thousand lifetimes? All of this during an atmospheric river. It was raining on the grand piano. I recommend everything up until the olympic torch lights up the hot air balloon over Paris. Which is like... the first three hours.
Summer; Yes, I do cry. I did in the Louvre several times, at Versailles and Giverny when standing in Monet’s kitchen; at MOMA IN NYC and the Metropolitan Museum of Arts walking up to the MET before seeing “Carmen”and every time we went to the Art Institute of Chicago at one spot or more. Great art moves me every time as it should.
Me to! Me to! I do cry at good art! Case in point- I cried at your performance last week!
I missed this article when you originally posted it but I think I was meant to read it today.
I rewatched a favorite face soaker last night. I’m pretty sure this artist participated in the Paris Olympics pyrotechnics. At least, it seems like it… check it out if you haven’t already.
I almost cried the whole time. I am French and it felt so good to show to the world the beautiful mess we are!!! I have been deeply touched at the resilience and sorority part. The Dance performed on Notre Dame made me melt. The living poetry of our values all along was just divine to watch!
The representation of the violence and blood spilled for freedom in ribbons and smoke hit hard. And after Les Mis and a row of beheaded Marie's, no less. Thank you for sharing. There were tears aplenty over here.
I will always cry over good art. Years ago, I sat in front of "Lucretia" by Rembrandt (1666) and cried for the better part of two hours at the High. When something is moving, we should allow ourselves to be moved.
Les Mis + a beheaded Marie Antoinette + throbbing heavy metal… what’s not to weep over?
Seriously, ‘Do You Hear The People Sing?’ always hits me in the heart, people rising up to fight for their rights
That's it! Thank you for articulating that for me. I'm just all sleep deprived and weepy today!

Thank you and thanks for maintaining Lady Gaga and Celine because now I have to go watch those as well!
what really got me was celine dion’s performance… tears aplenty… happy tears 🥲🥲

Thank you for reading and watching and commenting!
Vive la Liberte! Vive la France!

Wow! And that was not the same same horse that later wrote down the Seine- I believe maybe it was headless?
I was also SO moved by that section of the Opening Ceremony!! It was so good!
❤️❤️❤️💙💙💙🤍🤍🤍
I’m 70. Best ever Olympic opening. Stunningly creative and exciting.
Wow! Well shoot and that is saying a lot! Did you watch the Chinese opening ceremonies?
I did indeed. Spectacular.

my brain has been broken for quite a while. I’m starting to lean into it 😉

Gymnastics and swimming. Rugby romps. Archery targets the day.
Any particular heats I should watch?
Swimming and diving is a good splash. Along with Simone Biles leaping for gold.
Thank you, that was thoughtful of you to provide that link!
Of course! Art is for sharing with others <3

Also, I didn’t realize you cried watching my thing! I wonder what part….
Wow!!! Dang now I need to see that movie. 🧨
