The Sufis say, “This too shall pass” whenever there is a comment about “good” or “bad” events.

Once upon a time there was a world-wide pandemic. A “bad” event that became on-going wounding and lethal. This too shall pass.

One result of the pandemic was my working from my Seattle home rather than from my office at the university. This was both good and bad. This too shall pass.

Mom was 89 and living in Texas. She was becoming more frail with each passing year. Her care team was my sister and her husband, both of whom were working full-time from home. This was stressful. This too shall pass.

I looked at my table covered with a jigsaw puzzle, my desk covered by a computer and iPad, and my meditation corner, and thought… I could have this in Texas and help take care of Mom. Texas… a place I said that I would NEVER live. Was this good? Bad? Whatever. It felt right.

And here I am, 4 years later, and Mom is her lovely self!

Also, your comment, which I totally agree with 100% BTW, reminds me of a funny meme I saw once that said "This too shall pass. And then some other shit will take its place." Pretty much.

Yes, I bought a tiny house in Waco, 20 minutes from my Mom.

Brilliant satirical writing Summer. My husband is also a commercial fisherman in SE Alaska. I love how the landscape, your family, and your engaging observations shape your storytelling as you evolve - hard to believe you have not been writing your whole life. You inspire me to remain the feral woman/child who calls out the emperor who wears no clothes - a parable that defines the brogliarchy altered reality… although in that story - the villagers woke up to the spin. Just became a paid subscriber. I bow down to you🙇‍♀️ 💕

Your hubs is a fisherman too? Ahhhh more power to him! It's so hard nowadays. And you are so wonderful to say all that! I bow down to you for your generosity, both spiritual and financial! Thank you to YOU!!!

Your posts have climbed a notch in the New Year, and so subscribing has new value - kind of back to the high level I saw when I found you, only better. ❤️ As for Fact Checking, = Censorship. Imagine Fact Checking under Trump! Fact Checking = Fake News 🤣🤣 The new age of massive information is a source of chaos in itself. Reality is becoming so confused, at least for those of us who formed our consciousness in the pre-internet decades. Watch out for handsome doctors 🤣🤣❤️

LOL!!!! James, thanks! My daughter went to art camp yesterday, so I had some mental space, and I think the return to light and (slightly) longer days is helping. Good point about the surreality of truthiness in the digital age. Oh yeah, and I guess I did mention two doctors in that last post haha. Sorry not sorry?

Thanks for the nod my friend! Because really, what if does somehow all work out? (My phone is attempting to nudge me to put cheerleading emojis here 🤣) oh the irony.. I am a cynical skeptic, but also hold the door open for hope.

Oh that's funny that your phone thinks you're a cheerleader, lol! I'm a grinch, too. I used to think cheerleaders were so cringe. But we have to embrace the hope!

Grinch is my favorite! 🤣😍

These moments are a good reminder that we are participants, not spectators. It’s so easy to lob comments and critiques (and they do serve as a starting point) but as you say in this article (and your other posts), you’ve gotta keep moving with your actions, even if it’s uncomfortable. Like leaving Meta, or buying less, or moving locations and schools, as you did. This gets us out of helplessness or pointing at what’s bad and into that space of “maybe” because we are changing our response. 🙏🏼 great piece, Summer

Thanks, Van. You of all people would know!

Nice food for thought as always. Don’t be all sad. As you say “this too shall pass”. Even for we who are pleased at the end of Biden. What comes, comes next. Deal with next.

Oh..my parable.

Put YOUR priorities FIRST. Other people’s needs can occupy several lifetimes’ worth of your attention, and if you let them, they will.

Im still trying to learn/work on that one!
